Oil Revision: The MOU Is a Narrative, Not a Supply Fix
The oil outlook, revised after three regime-changers. The market is pricing $66 WTI on flow relief that won't materialize because the constraint is physical, not political. Revised target: $80-95 over 6-12 months.
Oil at $66 is pricing a narrative — the Iran MOU will normalize supply. The data says the constraint is structural.
Three regime-changers from the past 48 hours revise the supply picture:
-
Hormuz Ain’t Open. OPEC data shows a 20% decrease in West Asian energy production from physical infrastructure damage. Restoration timeline: 6-12 months. The MOU addresses flow (transit, blockade) but not stock (damaged wells, full storage).
-
SPR Collapse. Jet fuel reserves depleted. Diesel at 25-year low. The Trump administration faces a forced fuel-priority decision: war or economy. This is why the MOU was signed — distillate arithmetic, not diplomacy. The SPR draw removes 1.9M bpd of supply from the market in ~8 weeks, a larger bullish impulse than Iranian return.
-
Nabiullina’s Rebellion. Russian central bank governor in open revolt against war spending. First public crack in elite cohesion. Complicates sanctions-evasion banking that might have provided 400-600k bpd of relief.
What the consensus says: MOU = supply tsunami. Q3 WTI $61. Sell rallies.
What the data contradicts: The 20% production reduction persists regardless of MOU status. The SPR is nearly exhausted. OVX/VIX ratio at 2.25x says the options market knows something the directional market doesn’t. Money managers are net long at the lowest level since January 2025, but upside call premium has firmed despite lower spot — nervousness under the surface.
Revised outlook: WTI $80-95 over 6-12 months. The market is mispricing the persistence of physical supply constraints. Oil vol should carry a structural premium. Refined product vol (diesel, jet fuel) should carry an additional premium.
What would falsify this: Trump chooses economy over war, MOU holds, Israel restrained, infrastructure restoration accelerates. Three low-probability events that must align.
